5 Things You Should Know Before Buying a New Computer
When you are ready to buy a new computer, one of the first questions you may ask yourself is, “Where can I get the best deal?” Obviously you don’t want to pay more than you have to, but there are other considerations besides price that you should consider before making your decision.
If you shop the local electronics superstores for weekly specials, you can easily get a standard machine at a good price. This option would work best for you if you're not too picky or if you don't have any special requirements for gaming, graphics, or special software requirements.
If you buy over the Internet from a major manufacturer such as Dell or Lenovo, you'll get more choice and customization on the components, chip speed, RAM, hard drive size, and video components, but you'll pay a slightly higher price.
Our biggest recommendations for specifications on new PCs:
Intel i5 or i7 Core If you will be using your PC to process major graphics, or run an array of software all at once, you could benefit from an i7 Core. For the average user, an i5 Core is perfectly sufficient.
At least 8 GB of RAM Nowadays at least 8GB of RAM is needed to ensure smooth performance with modern applications that require more out of your machine. A power user may need up to 16GB of RAM, but that is overkill for most.
Solid State Hard Drive A solid state drive (as opposed to a spinning disk or HDD) offers quicker performance, an elongated lifespan, and additional protections against physical abuses. With cloud storage becoming more prevalent, a smaller capacity on the solid state drive is common.
Windows 10 Professional If you're buying this PC to be used in a business, ensure you are buying the Professional version of Windows 10. This allows your computer to be attached to the company network and affords additional protections. If you're buying this for simple home use (and won't be using it to work from home), Windows 10 Home is a perfectly acceptable alternative.
Productivity Software Many new PCs come with a 30-day trial of Office 365. We recommend purchasing a single-PC copy of Office 2019 or signing up for Office 365 to gain access to productivity applications such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.
