Alert: Spectre and Meltdown

January 5, 2018

As you have undoubtedly heard, there have been two newly announced vulnerabilities uncovered in literally all modern processors: Spectre and Meltdown.  While these sound like the titles of James Bond movies, they are actually the names of the identified vulnerabilities.

  • Spectre is a vulnerability that allows different applications to communicate with each other, potentially sharing information designed to be confidential

  • Meltdown is a vulnerability that allows applications to communicate with the installed operating system, potentially sharing information saved in the machine's memory, which was also designed to be confidential

The first step to prevention is through installation of system patches.  We have been testing the newly released operating system and software patches to ensure their install will not adversely affect your productivity.  As soon as they are cleared, we will be pushing them out to our client systems to ensure complete protection of their business.

As these vulnerabilities open all modern machines to potential attack, it is important to update your personal PCs, laptops, tablets, and cells to ensure you are protected at home.
